Working With Light Course
By Ollie Stratton

Our latest course was a resounding success, with attendee's from all over the country. We caught up with Simon Rowles who ran the course - a renowned Director of Photography and RTS documentary award winner with a wealth of experience gained over the last 25 years and has taught lighting on courses at Sky Studios alongside other previous courses for us.

Producer & Director Steven Vinacour said:

"Give Simon an idea of what you are looking to achieve, and he never fails to impress me with the results."

The course began with a summary of the tools needed and their purpose, this included both hard and soft lighting using a mixture of lighting kits and additional lighting equipment including materials used for controlling light, such as nets, flags and poly.

As part of the next stage, participants were split into two groups so that they could focus on lighting different environments, this allowed for a wider variety of subjects and locations, including two different single speaker shots captured in a range of lighting styles and then some pack-shots and product lighting.

Arri Alexa Mini's were chosen for this course and both prime and zoom lenses were used, including Zeiss CP.2's and Angenieux EZ1 14-35. These are an excellent choice for training as they offer consistent colour reproduction and will be equipment that students will encounter regularly within the industry.

A big thank you to Simon and to all the participants who joined, we shall be running regular training events so join the mailer for updates or keep an eye on the training section of the website for nw courses and dates!
